It’s monumentally important for you to have a great wedding – and we totally understand that. Your wedding is a huge milestone, marking the beginning of a brand-new chapter in your life. With all of your friends, family and loved ones that are going to be present, you may feel pressured to host the perfect wedding. While it can be one of the greatest days of your life, it’s easy to get caught up in the stress and the planning in order to create the event that you’ve always dreamed of. Here are 5 rules to follow that will help you keep your cool.

  1. Don’t try to do everything yourself

You might be smart, focused and capable, welcoming the challenge of planning every little detail with open arms. However, you’re still one person. Devoting every waking hour to wedding planning will likely leave you burned out. When you’re exhausted, that’s when things start to fall apart – details are missed, and suddenly, it seems like everything is coming undone. How do you avoid this? Ask for assistance! Accept your friends’ kind offers to help, and you’ll find yourself feeling much better.

  1. Don’t let your parents control your invite list

Pushy parents may insist on inviting distant relatives and their own friends to the wedding, even if you don’t particularly know who they are. This can create an awkward and expensive problem, in which you’re forced to squeeze in extra people (who are practically strangers!) into your wedding. Be firm with your parents if that isn’t what you want – but be prepared to negotiate and compromise if they continue to push for extra guests. Ask for their invite list, in order of preference, so you can cut from the bottom if necessary.

  1. Don’t forget about your partner

It may not seem obvious, but many people get so caught up in planning that they forget to spend time with their fiancée. Sure, you’ll have the rest of your lives to be together, but you’ll want to remember the days before the wedding as full of love and joy.

  1. Don’t bow to peer pressure

When you’re planning your wedding, you might encounter a lot of input on what to do from your friends and family. From what to wear, the music, the food and more, all of the pressure can push you into deciding on something that you’re not even sure about. It’s important to stand your ground! Everyone has an opinion – but at the end of the day, most of the decision making should come from you your partner.

  1. Practice self-care

Lastly, remember to set some time aside for yourself. Do whatever it takes to help you unwind from the stress, whether it’s getting a massage or having a night out with some friends. It’s important to enjoy yourself when you’re planning your wedding. It is, after all, a party that celebrates you and the love that you share with your partner. Don’t overthink the details and remind yourself to maintain a positive attitude!
